Fipronil and its metabolite fipronil sulfone act on the 'ligand-regulated' chloride channels, particularly the neurotransmitter Gamma-AminoButyric Acid (GABA) regulated as well as the Glutamate regulated 'desensitizing' (D) and 'non-desensitizing' (N) channels (Glu, its unique regulated chloride channels, occurring exclusively in invertebrates), which bind to the chloride channel and thereby block the pre- and post-synaptic transfer of chloride ions through the cell membrane. This results in uncontrolled activity of the central nervous system, leading to the death of insects and acarids.\r\u003cbr\u003e\r\u003cbr\u003ePyriproxyfen is an Insect Growth Regulator whose action is based on juvenile hormone analog activity. Pyriproxyfen sterilizes adult fleas and prevents the development of immature stages. The molecule prevents, through contact, the increase in the number of adult fleas by counteracting the development of their eggs (ovicide action), larvae, and pupae (larvicide action), which then disappear. \r\u003cbr\u003eIf adult fleas ingest pyriproxyfen and\/or come into contact with it, the molecule also sterilizes flea eggs during their development and even before they are laid.
