Collagen Formula Pro contains type II collagen (from chicken cartilage) with the brand name UC-II®. This collagen is produced by Interhealth, a renowned American supplier. Interhealth has invested heavily in the scientific substantiation of this product. Several human studies have been conducted with UC-II® showing good results. An important distinguishing feature of UC-II® is that it is a so-called 'undenatured' form of type II collagen. This means that the collagen is still present in its original form in the product and retains the same spatial (spiral) structure that can be recognized by the body. This is in contrast to 'denatured' type II collagen, which is also available as a supplement. In this case, the collagen has been processed through a hydrolysis step (where the collagen is broken down into smaller peptides under the influence of a chemical reaction with water). This alters the spatial structure of the molecule, which is unfavorable. For comparison: a daily dosage of only 40 mg of UC-II® with undenatured type II collagen is needed, while several grams of denatured type II collagen are typically required.
