Naturally, various types of bacteria live in the vagina. The bacteria that are normally present in large numbers are lactobacilli. Lactobacilli produce acidic lactic acid, which ensures the normal, low pH level of the vagina and prevents infections. When the number of lactobacilli decreases, the pH level increases, stimulating the growth of other bacteria. This can result in an unpleasant odor, unusual discharge, and discomfort in the vagina.

The growth of unwanted bacteria is called bacterial vaginosis, abbreviated as BV. Professionals estimate that at least one in three women, and likely most women, will experience BV at least once in their lifetime. BV is therefore the most common vaginal infection.

Symptoms
When the balance of normal bacteria in the vagina is disturbed, you may experience one of the following symptoms:

* Unpleasant vaginal odor (sometimes described as 'fishy')

* Unusual discharge (often thin and grayish-white in color)

* Discomfort (usually irritation or sensitivity in and around the vagina)


Causes
The vagina is normally very acidic (pH 3.8-4.5). Under certain circumstances, the acidity can decrease (and the pH increases). It becomes more difficult for healthy bacteria to survive, and the growth of unwanted bacteria is stimulated. The main causes are:

* Prolonged menstruation

* A course of antibiotics

* The use of intrauterine devices (e.g., the coil)

* Frequent showering (the good bacteria are also washed away)

* Scented products for intimate care

* Sex without a condom (semen has a higher pH than the vagina)

Other causes include a new sexual partner, multiple sexual partners, same-sex partners. But you do not need to be sexually active to get BV; menopause and hormonal disturbances can also cause BV (and non-sex-related causes in the above list).

A BV is certainly not always caused by a lack of hygiene; it is often caused by excessive washing, which alters the bacterial balance. BV is not an STI. Therefore, your male sexual partners do not need treatment.

Untreated BV

Instructions for use

Maintenance and prevention:
To maintain the natural pH balance and prevent recurrence of symptoms: Use 1 tube every third day for 3 months.

To help maintain the pH level during an antibiotic course: Use 1 tube daily at the end of your course for 4-5 days.

If you notice a recurrence of symptoms around the time of your menstruation: Use 1 tube daily at the end of the period for 1-2 days.
