What is gemmotherapy? Gemmotherapy is the newest branch of phytotherapy. It utilizes the buds, shoots, seeds, and root fibers or embryonic tissues of plants. These embryonic tissues contain all the properties (both biochemical and energetic) of the future complete plant (including fruits, flowers, leaves, stems, roots, etc.) and can be used to support and optimize our health. Gemmotherapy is a holistic approach. This means that it works on both the physical and energetic levels as well as on the psychological and emotional levels.

The founder of gemmotherapy is the Belgian doctor Dr. Pol Henry. In the 1960s, he researched embryonic plant cells for their therapeutic properties, following the research of his colleague Dr. Niehans on the medicinal use of animal embryonic cells. This led to the emergence of “phyto-embryotherapy,” of which he later published his first findings in the book “Phytembryothérapie.”

In the 1980s, the French doctor Dr. Max Tétau, along with several other European doctors, further developed phyto-embryotherapy. He gave it the definitive name “gemmotherapy” after the Latin word gemma, which means both “bud” and “semi-precious stone.”
