What this product is used for

* Allergy is a condition that is quite common. About 15% of people in the Netherlands are allergic to something. There are many types of allergies. The question is: what is an allergy exactly? An allergy is a reaction of the immune system to certain substances that enter the body. In healthy individuals, this does not cause complaints, but in allergy patients, it does. When a foreign substance enters the body, it is called an antigen. However, if that substance also triggers an allergic reaction, it is called an allergen. The substances produced by the immune system to combat these antigens are called antibodies (or immunoglobulins). Another name for antibodies is immunoglobulins. These immunoglobulins are responsible for the humoral immune response. There are 5 main groups of immunoglobulins, namely IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM. In allergies, IgE is the most important immunoglobulin.

Different allergies:

Allergies can be classified based on how you come into contact with allergens.

The main group of allergens is inhalation allergens. This means that these allergens are spread through the air. In this way, the allergens can come into contact with the mucous membranes of the airways. The allergens then enter the bloodstream and can bind to the antibodies present on a mast cell. This binding causes histamine to be released from the mast cell, which leads to shortness of breath, red eyes, a runny nose, sneezing fits, and asthmatic bronchitis.

The most well-known inhalation allergens:

* Pollen grains. Pollen grains are also known as pollen. These pollens come from certain types of trees and grasses. The complaints depend on the flowering period of the plants, and are therefore seasonal. The trees mainly bloom in spring (from February to May) and the grasses from April to August. All these allergens can be summarized under the term hay fever.

* Skin flakes from various furry (house) animals. A major misconception is that people think they are allergic to the hair of the animals. This is not the case. The allergic reaction is caused by the skin flakes of the animals.

* House dust mites. It was once thought that people were allergic to feather pillows, duvets, wool, or kapok, with the material being the source of the allergy. However, it is now known that there is a small, spider-like creature living in these substances, the house dust mite. The house dust mite feeds on human skin flakes. In the autumn, in damp, warm homes, the mites multiply rapidly. Therefore, the complaints are worst in the autumn and winter. Additionally, people tend to stay indoors more during this period. The other allergens enter the body in different ways.
