The hemoglobin value (Hb) of a blood sample is the concentration of hemoglobin in the blood, expressed in mmol/l or g/dl. The normal values are approximately 8.5 - 11 mmol/l for adult men and 7.5 - 10 mmol/l for adult women.

Different values apply for pregnant women and children. In Belgium, measurements are not calculated in mmol/l but in g/dl. The normal values are 13.6 - 17.7 g/dl for adult men and 12.0 - 16.0 for adult women.

The Multicheck PLUS meter is capable of displaying both mmol/l and mg/dL. The meter can be set to the desired measurement unit.

The HB level is used to possibly indicate anemia:

Anemia (anemia, from the Greek αναιμα, bloodless) is a condition in which there is a low level of hemoglobin (Hb) in the blood. This can be the result of disturbed production, increased breakdown, or loss of red blood cells. Hemoglobin is the red, oxygen- and carbon dioxide-transporting protein in blood, found in red blood cells.

Hemoglobin contains iron, and a deficiency of iron also leads to anemia. An iron deficiency can be the direct result of insufficient iron in the diet, but it can also be due to an inability to absorb iron or increased loss of already present iron. However, iron deficiency is not the only cause of anemia; there are dozens of other possible causes, most of which are rare to very rare. In the Netherlands, anemia is referred to when the Hb is lower than 7.5 mmol/l in women (6.8 in pregnant women) and lower than 8.5 mmol/l in men.

Very often, a low HB level indicates an iron deficiency. However, report a low HB level to your general practitioner. He or she can then determine the cause of the deficiency through additional testing. This is done by measuring the MCV (mean corpuscular volume). The result will indicate the possible underlying cause.
