Omschrijving

Testjezelf.nu Thyroid Blood Self-Test

A simple at-home test to measure your TSH levels. This thyroid-stimulating hormone normally ensures that the production of thyroid hormones (T4 and T3) – which are essential for normal growth and development and have effects on metabolism – occurs in the correct ratio.

Function of the thyroid:

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck that produces thyroid hormones. These hormones (T3 and T4) are important in regulating many processes in the human body. They ensure normal growth and development and are essential for a balanced metabolism. When your thyroid is underactive, you have a deficiency of thyroid hormone in your body. This slows down your metabolism.

Typical characteristics of an underactive thyroid:

A reduced thyroid function can lead to a range of complaints and problems. Often, these are nonspecific symptoms and signs whose severity varies from person to person.

Typical signs that may indicate an underactive thyroid include:
– weight gain,
– fatigue,
– lethargy and depressive mood,
– slowness in motor skills, speech, reduced concentration (especially in older adults, and is difficult to distinguish from (early) dementia),
– feeling cold,
– constipation,
– slowed heart rate,
– skin changes: dry, rough, cold, or pale skin, coarser hair and hair loss,
– muscle weakness, pain, and muscle stiffness,
– disrupted menstrual cycle, infertility, excess prolactin hormone.

Usage
1. How does the TSH test work? The thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) activates the thyroid. Therefore, a TSH value of more than 5 IU/ml in a positive result indicates an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), which requires more TSH. The test is suitable for checking if your thyroid is underactive. In rare cases, the thyroid may also be overactive. This can only be determined in a lab after referral by your general practitioner. 2. When should the test be used? In the case of hypothyroidism, symptoms such as fatigue, feeling depressed or cold, weight gain, dry skin, brittle hair, persistent constipation, or irregular menstrual cycle (in women) occur. It is recommended to perform the TSH Check for screening purposes. TSH Check can be used at any time of the day. However, it should not be performed in the case of hormonal medical treatment of the thyroid. 3. Can the result be incorrect? The results are accurate as long as the instructions are carefully followed. Nevertheless, the result may be incorrect if the TSH test gets wet before the test is performed or if the amount of blood added to the test is insufficient, or if the number of buffer drops is less than 2 or more than 3. The capillary dropper ensures that the collected blood volume is correct. Additionally, due to the involved immunological principles, there is a rare chance of false results. For such tests, a consultation with a doctor is always recommended based on immunological principles. 4. How to interpret the test if the color and intensity of the lines differ? The color and intensity of the lines are not important for interpreting the result. The lines should only be homogeneous and clearly visible. The test should be considered positive, regardless of the color intensity of the test line compared to the control line. 5. If I read the result after 20 minutes, is the result reliable? No. The result should be read 10 minutes after adding the buffer. The result is unreliable after more than 20 minutes. 6. What should I do if the result is positive? If the result is positive, it means that the TSH level in the blood is higher than normal (5 IU/ml) and that you should consult a doctor to show the test result. The doctor will then decide whether further analysis should be performed and what the next steps are. 7. What should I do if the result is negative? If the result is negative, it means that the TSH level is lower than 5 IU/ml and within the normal range. A case of hyperthyroidism, although rare, cannot be ruled out based on such test results. If you have complaints and the test result is negative, you could also have an overactive thyroid. It is therefore highly advisable to consult a doctor. Follow the instructions in the manual.

Gebruiksaanwijzing
