Vitals Milk Thistle-PSMilk thistle (Silybum marianum) is an herb that has a very strong reputation. The name 'milk thistle' comes from the legend that the white spots on the leaves are from the milk of the Holy Virgin Mary. For milk thistle supplements, the seeds (fruits) are typically used for extraction. The black fruit wall contains flavonolignans (including silymarin, with silybin as the main component), flavonoids, and phenolic derivatives. Silybin is the most important active ingredient. Vitals Milk Thistle-PS contains the key ingredient Siliphos®, a silybin extract with significantly improved bioavailability due to the combination with phosphatidylcholine (Phytosome® technology). It is standardized to 60 mg of silybin per capsule.
Improved bioavailability through Phytosome® technology
The bioavailability of Milk Thistle-PS has been significantly improved by the application of the patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian producer Indena. The term Phytosome (or phytosome) comes from the Greek word phuton (plant) and soma (body, particle). During the patented production process, the natural clumping of specific, poorly absorbable phytonutrients (such as those from milk thistle) is limited, and these are mixed with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) from sunflower lecithin. The active substances are not encapsulated (as in liposomes), but a homogeneous mixture of small, well-absorbable combination particles is created. The active ingredients from milk thistle are both lipophilic (flavonolignans) and hydrophilic (phenolic derivatives, flavonoids). And phospholipids are lipophilic on one side and hydrophilic on the other. This causes the phytonutrients to tend to attach to the phospholipids and form so-called phytosomes. In this way, they are absorbed even better. Cell membranes (such as those of intestinal cells) also consist of a phospholipid bilayer, allowing the active ingredients to be well absorbed. Studies have shown that by applying this Phytosome technology, the bioavailability of silybin from Siliphos® is 10 times greater compared to a regular milk thistle extract.
Unlike liposome technology
In a liposome, the active substance is located in the center of a sphere with a double layer of phospholipids. In Phytosome technology, it is truly about a homogeneous mixture, and the active substance is not encapsulated. This means you need much less phospholipids than with liposomes.
