Vitals Psyllium fibers organicPsyllium is a natural source of soluble and fermentable fibers. It is derived from the seed husk of the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant, which is primarily cultivated in India. Psyllium fibers can absorb up to ten times their own weight in water. They cannot be broken down by digestive enzymes in the small intestine and therefore arrive intact in the large intestine. Thanks to their good solubility in water, they can be broken down (fermented) by the gut flora in the large intestine, producing short-chain fatty acids (such as butyrate). Other soluble fibers are mainly found in vegetables, fruits, legumes, and grains such as oats. The recommended total daily intake of dietary fibers is 30-40 grams for adults. People with a low fiber intake can use psyllium fibers as a supplement to their diet. Psyllium can be taken with (plenty of) water, but it can also be incorporated into food. Moreover, psyllium is a good gluten substitute in recipes and can be used as a binding agent in bread (about 4 grams per 500 grams of flour), healthy snacks, sauces, and soups. Psyllium can also be added to, for example, a smoothie or breakfast cereals.
Organic
The active ingredients of organic dietary supplements are guaranteed to be of natural origin and not synthetically manufactured. Additionally, production takes into account the environment, animals, and humans as much as possible. Various regulations define what this entails. Among other things, no chemical pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms are used. The Skal Biocontrol institute checks whether the regulations are followed and whether a product can be labeled as organic. Organic products are identifiable by the code NL-BIO-01 and the European organic label.
