Lactoferrin is a type of protein that we mainly find in the breast milk of mammals, in both humans and animals. Particularly the very first produced breast milk, called colostrum, is rich in this substance.

Hence the word 'lacto', which refers to the richest source: milk. 'Ferrin', however, refers to the important ability of lactoferrin to bind to iron.

Immediately after our birth, we receive large amounts of lactoferrin through the first breast milk. However, this decreases significantly afterwards. Although the body can partially produce lactoferrin itself, it is never the same amount that you receive at birth.
